I was honored to illustrate the cover for the October 2024 Issue of The Friend Magazine. This is the fifth cover I’ve illustrated for The Friend over the years! It was fun to illustrate Family History!

Fun facts: The Friend Magazine is translated into 48 different languages and is available in 150 counties all over the world. I think that is pretty cool! I got a copy in English and Spanish. Anonymoose was acquired by my publisher, Beaming Books, as a fully sketched out dummy book. But I created the cover with the help of my editor @naomi.j.krueger and the Beaming Books marketing team. Here’s a peek of the process from thumbnails to final cover!

Some other fun facts about my process of creating Anonymoose:

It started from an idea I had back in 2018. My idea was: “Anonymoose- Moose is a detective or just wants to blend in and finds hilarious ways to do so chameleon style.” The thought of a big moose hiding made me laugh.

I wrote my first draft of Anonymoose in 2018. The first versions were a lot more silly, and it went through many versions and critiques before I found the story it needed to be. Special thanks to my critique group friends and agent @lkliterary for helping me find the right story. The story became more connected to my experiences as a child- being shy and not feeling like I fit in, and finding a special friend to connect with. I love where the story ended up- sweet with just the right amount of humor!

“Stepping out is better than hiding out.

Ana Moose prefers being alone. She doesn’t have to worry about finding the right thing to say or being picked last for teams. Blending into her surroundings, she dubs herself Anonymoose. Then she sees her classmate Peter, a porcupine, building a fort and wishes she could share her own architectural ideas without revealing herself. So, day after day, Ana leaves sketches from “Anonymoose” around; Peter incorporates her plans into his creation. Ana enjoys watching the fort improving daily. Then her best idea strikes: a tall tower. Is she brave enough to tell Peter personally? Nah. Ana shares her brainstorm the usual way; Peter adds it. Alas, he tumbles and gets hurt, and the fort crashes to the ground. Ana’s dilemma: Reveal herself and help or remain concealed? While she’s thinking, Peter limps off. Next day, Ana hides again, waiting for Peter to return; he doesn’t. Remorseful, Ana slowly emerges from seclusion and attempts to rebuild the fort, unaware that Peter’s actually nearby, observing. Together, they re-create—no, improve on—the original, and they bond. Ana’s no longer Anonymoose. This sweet story reassures readers that shyness is OK and can be overcome. Peter’s fort serves as a metaphor for the walls we sometimes build to shield ourselves from relationships. The colorful, charming illustrations exude lively fun. Middle Grade Novel Covers Day 1.

Here’s a few things I’ve illustrated for The Friend Magazine that have been published the past few months. @thefriendmag I love illustrating for The Friend. I love getting the chance to research and illustrate children that live all over the world! This magazine is made for children all over the world!

The first article takes place in Brazil. My cousin, Hayden, who was living in Brazil when I was working on the art, helped me learn that in Brazil their “French Toast” is really a traditional dish called “Rabanada,” which looks a bit different than American French Toast. He also sent a couple images of what an apartment hallway might look like. The editors of the magazine sent some photos of the real family in the story.

The second article takes place in South Africa. The editors of the magazine sent photos of the actual family in the story. I copied the leopard print the main character is wearing right from a shirt she was wearing in one of the photos!

The third photo is a hidden images illustration, featuring many children singing in their church congregation!

What a great way to end a wonderful year of school visits. This year my friend @janetsumnerjohnson and I decided to do school author visits together. We had our last visit this week to Summit Elementary. We had a wonderful welcome from them, and were delighted to find the students had written and drawn pictures about their favorite parts of our books. I guess the illustrations I created for the book had a little bit to do with winning the award, since they said “quality of illustrations and how they support the text.”😊
